The community garden project at the Benwiskin Centre

 

In 2010, The project at The Benwiskin Centre will be in its fifth year. For the first three years, the project was a joint venture between the Benwiskin Centre and The Organic Centre in Rossinver.  The fourth year participants were led by instruction from Martin Byrne, gardener.  In 2010, Ciara Barrett will lead the group.

This year's course is due to commence on 12th April 2010 to mid-September.  The course will run every Monday from 10am - 12 noon at the Benwiskin Centre.  Participants will learn about propagation, harvesting, soil management, crop rotation, preservation etc. reaping the benefits of their hard work come harvest time.

Items planted by the group over the years have included marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums and borage, through to a wide selection of vegetables – carrots, parsnips, celery, cabbage, lettuce, marrows, peas, beans, celeriac and herbs to include sage, thyme, rosemary and fennel. The apple trees are growing well and we hope for a good supply of fruit next year.

Well done to all the past gardeners who worked hard and hopefully have taken what they have learned and are now planning to grow their own vegetables!
